In the Footsteps of Bryan Blundell

A self-guided walking tour of Bryan Blundell’s Liverpool.

Much of the Liverpool that Bryan Blundell knew has gone, buried beneath two centuries of docks, warehouses, bombing and rebuilding. Yet the shape of his town is still there if you know where to look, and a few of the buildings he would recognise are standing today, including the Bluecoat on School Lane, the school he helped to found in 1714 and the oldest building in central Liverpool.

This short walk follows the places that shaped his life and the story told in The Slave Trader: the waterfront where he first went to sea as a boy, the streets where he traded, the church he worshipped in, and the charity that became his life’s work.
